It my own fault. I get excited. I get invested. I get disappointed.
I thought my stuff was a shoe in for Mark Millar's (kickass) new magazine Clint. Which wanted sci-fi, humour, and/or horror strips.
I now have no idea why, but the other week I was so sure.
Why was I so sure? No, it's gone. I've got no clue anymore...
These were the winners...
Emergency Pit-Stop by Mateus Santolouco page 2
The Fall of the Fortress by Bruno Leazia page 3
Treasure by Stephen Baskerville page 6
Loop by Percy Guiterez page 11
The Diner by Manuel Bracchi page 12
I'm on pages 7 9 and 11 but you know what I stuck up there, because I put it up here too. There was a couple of pages of new stuff and a couple of re-hashes of old "classic strips"
The main difference I can see between the winning stuff and my stuff is that my stuffs funnier and my people don't look like people. Humm, I'm not going to change. I'm pretty sure that if I remain the same, the entire world will change around me.
So forgive my current malaise, but following the excitement and the investedness comes a feeling of "Aw fuck it, what's the fuckin' point?"
I'll be back doing what I do in a few days I should think.

I still think you're hysterical and you get far less attention than you deserve. Fucking pisses me off.
Know how you feel. Sort of takes the fun out of it.
Yours was the best, by a mile.
Well, the submission guidelines are pretty clear. He's asking for Twilight Zone/Future Shock type stories with twist endings.
If this is definitely something you want to be involved in, you might do better writing something for a separate artist. He's said he'd look at the creators' potential separately, so even if they don't buy the story you submit, it can at least get you noticed and lead to a writing gig.
You're a great writer, and I think you could get much further with this opportunity if you work that angle. If you want to give it another shot, let me know and I'll see about hooking you up with an artist.
Most submissions tend to a definite graphic style, and this obviously influences the selection.
As F! said, they can be capable to value separately the components of your art. However, I believe an adult comic can be very powerful with a graphic approach like yours.
Cheer up!
thanks everyone.
F! You're right I should have stuck closer to the brief,
When they said sci-fi, humour, horror, I thought it would be enough to tick one box the humour one, but really tick it with some of the greatest comedy the world has seen.
And with the time scope, what about flying cars, and that thing from another world I was doing sci-fi and comedy. And two of those had twists at the end.
The time scope strip was actually a bit of a rip off* of a future shock I remember from my days reading 2000ad. A wizard sees that the kingdoms greatest warrior will die in four days, which means he can not die in tomorrows big battle. Knowing this the warrior wades into battle with wild abandon gets stabbed and takes three days to die on the battle field.
So maybe my problem is my art. If celebrity toy tracer Alex Ross had drawn the time scope or if (seriously) ben templesmith had drawn that thing from another world... humm.
I don't know. My problem is for most of time I think my art goes best with my writing. And I'm properly into comedy more than sci-fi or anything else.
And in a really naive childish way I don't want a career path that leads to where I want to be. I'd rather just jump straight to huge success.

Yeah, I feel you. I think you have it in you to do well solely as a writer if that was your bag, but you're a cartoonist -- I don't think there is an easily defined line between the writing and art, especially in your best work.
That said, I do think you have some material that'd fit their guidelines if you changed your mind and wanted to partner with an artist for a new adaptation. The World B and Inversion stuff seems right up their alley. I know that if The God Fish short we did had fit their page-count restriction, I'd be pimping that bitch like woah.

I think some of your shorter three panel gags would have been nice to have on the letters page (if there is one).
You should look up Coffee, Cake and Kink, if they ever did a magazine your stuff would be a good fit for them.
