So, A few months ago we went over the overdraft for two days by £4 and got charged £20 by the bank (HSBC), plus a further £17 because a direct debit went out on the second day.
Making £37.
Over the course of the next month we managed to claw back and save £17 of this. That sounds crap doesn't it, but there really is no where to cut back on. (I haven't been out at night for over a year now.)
So I we went over the overdraft the next month by a nice round £20, and got charged another £20, plus another £17
Which made for a minus of £57. Luckily it's been my birthday and I got £70 (£20 off Dad £50 off Mum) So I spent all of that on staying out of the Red. Happy Birthday to me.
Then the Bank ring me up pointing out that I went over twice in a row and suggested I switch my account to one that automatically gives me a text warning if I reach my limit.
Sounds good, Ill go for that.
"For the upgrade you'll be charged £6 for the first introductory month, changing to £12 a month from then onwards."
No then. I only went over £4 in the first place!
HSBC are bastards.

Bloody banks! I bank with first direct who I'm fairly sure offer that text message service as free on some accounts. I ended up disabling it as it drove me nuts, but it might be worth checking to see if they still do that. They also do 'free' overdrafts to a certain point so may be better than the parent comapany.
Good luck and best wishes to you all, BG Xx

Welcome to my world. A few years ago, I went into my bank for a 'chat' for some reason and mentioned that my constantly bouncing in and out of the red must make me one of their worst customers.
"On the contrary Mister Underhill. We make more money from your type of customer than we do from anyone that stays in the black"
'Studs!
